Work
Doing your job, or doing your work
Yesterday, while listening to a favourite podcast, I began to develop a more rounded understanding of work and its impact, both personally and societally.
The conversation was centred on Pope Leo XIV’s major encyclical on artificial intelligence, titled “Magnifica Humanitas” (Magnificent Humanity), a 42,300-word manifesto. In summary, it urges the global community to establish strict regulations and “disarm” AI. He warns against treating AI as a neutral tool, highlighting that it threatens human dignity and economic justice when driven solely by profit.
On work, I’ve always defaulted to “doing your job” vs. “doing your work.” First, you must understand the difference. The latter should be the default; the former is simply following someone’s instructions.
Where do you land?
Sorry, I’m short of time this morning—it’s a topic worth coming back to.
