When enough is enough
Find just enough
It feels more and more that life is a race to enough. Or more accurately, a race that never runs its course, because enough never seems enough.
Our football teams need to play better. We want more from the politicians—fair enough, I say. The house isn’t quite big enough, the car is looking a bit tired. Cash—we never have enough of that. Inflation, schooners into double figures, family dinners that feel like a mortgage payment.
The goalposts keep moving. We keep running.
Last night, I was made to stop.
Called into the local for an over-priced schooner—not the hotel’s fault—caught up on some goss, then was herded into the band room. “Have you listened to the Sweethearts before?” Images of a Northern Soul band came to mind.
I was wrong. In the best possible way.
The Sweethearts are an award-winning all-girls youth music and jazz band based at Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College here in Geelong. Founded in 1989 by music teacher Ross Lipson, they’ve built a national and international reputation performing soul, R&B, and jazz. At least a baker’s dozen of them on stage last night—17 and 18 year olds—raw, polished, and completely alive.
They were fantastic.
For the first time in a while, enough was enough. Right there in that room, nothing was missing. No upgrade required. No goalposts to chase.
Raw talent is alive and well. It was great to see.
Enjoy your weekend. Find just enough.
Nick
