Let's not talk about me
So, what do you think about me?
The trick here is not to preach—try not to sound condescending or righteous. But then there has to be opinion. If not, what’s the point—it’s about striking a balance. Today I might be on the preaching side of it. It’s a work in progress. Let me know?
That said, the condescending draws me to a story worth sharing.
Way back when kids got packed off to sporting camps during summer break, a friend —who recruited for Hawthorn FC for many years—was working a cricket camp at Scotch College in Melbourne. It remains a favourite of mine.
Greg B always took the senior kids. He had a sharp wit and exquisite delivery. Looking back, it seems he used the three days as a practice space for his upcoming gigs. It was the first morning—he always started with a lengthy oration on his achievements and what he planned to do next. Elvis was a favourite topic. Luke Hodge always received a mention—Greg recruited him to Hawthorn. Cricket rarely got a mention. And so it went.
The kids were restless. It was hot. Flies needed to be shooed continually. On he went.
Until the closing line:
“Alright, fair enough, let’s not talk about me, why don’t we talk about you. So, what do you think about me?”
Happy Wednesday. Get your tips in.
Nick
