Getting older
It's not as easy as it was. That's exactly why it's worth doing.
I’m sorry, it starts with you.
Ageing has shifted my perspective, bringing a sharp, undeniable focus to my own mortality. At a point in time, brands, trends, and yes, people, start telling themselves they're getting old.
Avoiding that trap has to be a priority as you move through the decade blocks. Flipping the symptoms is a more productive place to be.
Entering the third trimester of my being demands much more than the first, less so the second—but yes, it takes work to not think you’re nearer the end than you were at the start. Maintaining exercise patterns, continuing leisure pursuits, and challenging yourself intellectually—all of it helps ward off the negative thoughts.
The same duffed chip, or curling three-foot putt that has defeated me for forty years still defeats me now—well, occasionally. It still bothers me, I care. That's the point.
The honest truth: ageing doesn't happen at the same time for everyone. It's not a rule or a biological fixed point. It's both a feeling and a choice. And you can short-circuit both with a little effort and bluff.
It’s not as easy as it once was. Maybe that’s exactly why it’s worth doing.
