Wednesday I wrote about my friends Trey and Lyndsay—at Third Wheel Bikes in Beverly, Mass. Good people getting done over by an acquisitive landlord. “Small business is difficult enough without unwelcome intervention.”
I lauded their staunch commitment to taking time away from a business they cared deeply about—they closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Of course, it was more about me. I’m becoming increasingly aware of my tendency to anchor most of what I write here to something I’ve experienced myself. It grates on me. Hopefully not on you. I said I would open and close for a couple of days—Thursday and Friday—but a story surfaces and off we go. The Hook. Queueing Questions.
So here we are, Saturday, and it’s not pissing down.
Some days the energy isn’t there. Overworking, difficult sleep, too much of a noisy head, emotional conversations, starting to feel crook. Those days we should rest. It might not be prudent to push through, get done what you think needs doing. It’s OK not to have the capacity to do that. Rest can be the answer.
Today and tomorrow I’ll play that card and see what Monday brings.
Oh, back to Trey and Lyndsay.
P.S. I ordered a copy of Couples by John Updike—per Trey’s instructions.
