Brotherly love
Sibling chemistry. Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick win the Zurich Classic. How good.
Alex Fitzpatrick, playing on a sponsor’s exemption, taps in for birdie to claim victory at the Zurich Classic in Louisiana, alongside his older brother Matt.
For Matt, it meant back-to-back wins. For Alex, the win means the absolute world—he is now exempt through 2028 on the PGA Tour and will negotiate with his older brother for an equal share of this week’s winning purse, which will be close to 1.5 million USD. How different the pressures were.
Saturday, I met a young family by chance. It was fascinating to watch the different personalities, yet how connected the three were, and how the pecking order shifted as they competed for an equal share of attention.
The Fitzpatrick sibling chemistry was evident throughout the week. Matt quietly assumed the lead role in his patented, measured approach. Alex, shirt untucked, played faster and more mercurial—but ham-and-egged perfectly.
What struck me about both—the Fitzpatricks and the young family by chance—was how the dynamic shifts, but the connection doesn’t. The pecking order moves, the personalities diverge, the shirts stay tucked or don’t. But the thread between them holds.
Siblings are the longest relationship most of us will ever have.
For the Fitzpatricks, this will be a day they will hold together forever. How good!
Nick
