#87
Your numbers are always your numbers
I've been sober for nearly three months. You know different, of course. I have posted daily since April 1, though. Some kind of joke, right?
He cried. It wasn’t purposeful, he was a senior player, too. It was just something I said that caught him off guard and clearly hit close to home.
“Your numbers: you build, protect, and own them. Your numbers will always be your numbers.”
Darty was finishing up at Melbourne CC—he started his career there, went elsewhere, then returned to win a flag. His numbers said he was a proper player. And he was. He teared up.
Numbers run cricket: batting averages, strike rates, runs; wickets, economy rates, dot ball percentages. That’s just the tip of it.
This is post #87. Still in building mode. The journey so far has been good, bad, and somewhere in between—much like a season’s numbers.
#87 is a significant number in Australian cricket. Without overthinking it, here’s a simple Mancunian definition: 87 is 13 short of 100, which used to be an important score in cricket, and 13 is an unlucky number. So 87 is to be avoided.
And 13 being unlucky? It has something to do with its proximity to 12. Or Christians would argue it was Judas being the 13th guest at the Last Supper.
Either way, whether it’s the Devil’s number in cricket (87) or just plain unlucky for most 13— numbers do shape how we see and receive things.
For ADS, we’re just building quietly. Trying to say more with less. Keeping a loose eye on the milestones ahead.
Have a good day wherever you are. It’s the second day of July here.
Nick
